Gilbert de Umfreville, 8th Earl of Angus was born circa 1244.1 He was the son of Gilbert de Umfreville and Maud, Countess of Angus.1 He married Elizabeth Comyn, daughter of Alexander Comyn, 6th Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth de Quincy.1 He died before 13 Oct 1307.1 in 1265 he joined the uprising of the Barons against the King.1 He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Angus [S., c. 1115] circa Jun 1267.1 In 1281 he was one of the Nobles who swore to ratify the marriage of Margaret of Scotland to Eric, King of Norway.1 He gained the title of 1st Earl of Angus [England] on 28 Jun 1283.2 He held the office of Governor of Dundee, Forfar Castle and Angus in 1291.1 In 1291 he refused to surrender Angus to England.1 He was created 1st Lord Umfreville [England] on 24 Jun 1295.1
