Th the time and before Granny Pop and Jonathan Woody were raisingthat large family, she grew flax and wove it into material. Flax is purelinen after it is processed. It is noted for its strength, coolness, andwearability. she made knee length shirts for the boys. These shirts wereso durable, they probably never wore out and got passed down to the nextchild when the first ones out grew them. At the same time the youngIndian men wore the knee length deer skin shirts. When Hiram was sisteen or seventeen, about 1868, he had asweetheart. One day several of the family (Woodys and Caldwells) were outhoeing corn when Hiram happened to look down the road and saw a group ofgirls comming up the road, and his girl freind was in the group. He didnot want to be seen in that long shirt, so he ran to the house and up thestairs to change into some pants. He jerked off the long shirt in such aa hurry he was totally naked and forgot that some planks in the floor hadnot been nailed down. He happened to step on the end of a loose plank,flipping it up and dropping him naked as a picked bird right down in thefront of the door, just as the girls were entering. He was so embarrassedthat he ran back up the stairs and would not come down until the girlsleft. Hiram worked as a teamster to Greenville, SC for ten cents a day,saved his money, and bought the home and some of the land that was hisfathers, from the other heirs. All of his children were born there.
