Margaret had a family of six sons and three daughters, allofwhom, except for her last child Mary Margaret, reachedadulthoodin the community of Hutto,Texas. A hundred and twentyodd yearsafter the fa ct. On May 27, 1881, at the young age of47,Margaret, mother of all known descendants of James E. HuttoSr.,died and was buried along side her youngest daughter,MaryMargaret, in the Shiloh Cemetery s ome three miles southeastofthe town of Hutto, Texas. We visited the Shiloh CemeteryinMarch, 1998 and found it an old and forgotten cemetery thatisoccasionally attended too. It is on a hill that ris es 20ftabove the surrounding terrain and is next to Brushy Creek.Itwas said that one could drive across the creek at the oldShilohcrossing which again is just down from the cemetery in acar afew y ears back. The location was supposed to have been ontheChisom trail and cattle drives crossed at this pointfrequentlyin years gone by. Shiloh was the primary town in theareabefore the Railroad wa s put in , resulting in the foundingofthe town of Hutto. Over the years Shiloh became a ghost townasHutto prospered and the only reminder that the town everexistedis the cemetery. The fact that th e hill seems oddly outof placeon the banks of the Brushy Creek, which by the way seemsto flowyear round and is more like a clear stream than the oldcreekwe all grew up on with its blackish green c olor. I thoughtit, the hill, might have been an old Indian mound of sorts.Thegrave of Margaret is over grown with saplings and weeds andthetombstone, a large tall pyramid styled marker lies on theground. The base of the tombstone is tilted forward slightly asaresult of the soil moving over the many years it was placedtheresome 117 years ago. The family plot is guarded by anoldornamental iro n fence about 6' x 6', reflecting the styleusedin the late 1800s. Generally the enclosing of a grave plotwithsuch a fence would be some indication of wealth on the partofthe family. Three and 1/ 2 year old little Mary Margaretisburied next to her mother. Her mother, followed her daughterashort 8 years later in death. Little Mary Margaret'stombstoneis still in an erect position but some w hat soliedfrom the 125years of weathering it has withstood. HughDavenport, a localresident and friend of the Hutto family, shared that on occasionthe sheriff's department would bringinmates out t o clear theweeds and clean up the cemetery, butthose activities have beensparse. The iron fence surrounding thegrave site is bent on thenorth end from a crushing fall of alarge tree said Hugh. Hug hsaid he burned the old tree stumpout of the plot and a gappinghole, the size of a small treestares back at one as you viewthe scene. It looks like maybe thetree was there justyesterday, and yet t here are no indicationsof anything havingburned. Hugh said that he cleaned the gravesite up 3 or 4 yearsago. The gate that allows entrance to thesite is entangled intrees, saplings of 2 and 3 inc h diameter.I could not open thegate. Becky had to climb the fence to get acloser look at thegrave stones. We plan to go back this summerand clean the siteup. Maybe we can reposition the head stone sbase and reset thehead stone of our ancestor. There was astrangeness about seeingone's family grave site in a state ofdisrepair. But then it wasstrange finding this old grave siteand establishin g aconnection to a person that I had neverknown but now some whatmourn, after the fact. A hundred andtwenty odd years after thefact. 1880 Census for WilliamsonCounty list J. E. Hutto'swife's paren ts as both born in Tenn.
