"In 1858, in company with her parents and their children, Jesse Nutt and his wife came to Texas, and the following year he was joined by his parents and a part of the family..." Became blind in 1854 of some eye disease. One source indicated that he and D.L. had some type of eye probem and were treated by a quack doctor. The medicine he used caused the blindness. (Pg 246) He and Jacob, also blind, opened a business in 1867 "at Stockton on the Brazos, a small hamlet which first bore the name of Landers' Crossing, and was located about three miles up the river from the present city of Granbury. Their joint capital at the time amounted to thirty dollars. Both were persevering by nature, and afflication had made them doubly patient. They economized at every point, bought goods in small quantities, always using up the accumulating surplus, however, small in this way. In 1868, Granbury was settled, and they moved at once to the new town and built the second house, a log house, in which they opened up business. They gradually prospered. When their business outgrew their store, they erected another - sixteen by twenty feet - a part of the lumber used in the construction being hauled from east Texas by ox teams. For this they paid five hundred dollars, at the rate of ninety dollars for a thousand feet. In course of time, this structure was outgrown by their constantly increasing business, which necessitated the erection of their present commodious store building, at a cost of ten thousand dollars. Their stock is one of the largest in the county, while the volume of their trade aggregates thirty-five thousand dollars annually. The brothers together gave attention to their mercantiles business until 1883, when a tract of six hundred and forty acres was purchased by them on the Paluxy creek. At that time Uncle Jake, as his a familiarly called, went to the farm to give it his personal supervision, and Uncle Jesse and D. L. remained in charge of the store. This widened interest proved a source of profit. Since then, by purchase, they have added to the original tract until the present they own two thousand and five hundred acres of good land. (Taken from "History of the Nutt Family of Granbury, Texas, and quoted in The Nutt Family, Merle C. Nutt, 1973. See the later for more information.) Jesse F. Nutt was intensely religious and was a Baptist. Administration of his estate is recorded in Book J, pages 373-375 (Hood County, TX). M. J. Haralson was Executor.
