[Bill's Nutt.FTW] See Sarah Ann Landers' scrapbook for a photo of four of his sons. See: "Nutt/McNutt, Descendents of David Nutt of Orange County, NC," by Robert Harris Damon (formerly Damon Harris Nutt) and Christine Virginia (Weatherall) Damon, published by Gateway Press, Baltimore, MD 1994 - Library of Congress Catalogue Card No. 94-75935. Referred to as David G. Nutt, Jr. "We found David G. Nutt in the 1820 Census for Orange Co., N.C. Leonidas Dallas McNutt named a Granville Nutt in his history that we have been unable to locate and have assumed he meant David Granville . . . and show his name as above - at least to show a distinction between the two. The Deed 'David Nutt to Elijah Parker," recorded in Book HH, p. 270, Deed Records of Bedford Co., TN dated June 20, 1836, places this family in Bedford County at that time." See p. 83ff. See also as a source the book written by Merle C. Nutt in 1973 - the following is quoted from the above reference. The Nutt Family Through the Years. Merle says David, Jr. "continued his residence in Tennessee until 1844. He and the family then moved to Newton County, Missouri where he purchased land which was cultivated by his sons while he applied himself to his trade of blacksmithing. There the family resided until 1859 when the parents and four of their children, Jacob, Abel, Susan A. and D. L. moved to Texas to join their son and brother Jesse F. who had preceded them to the Lone Star state, locating in what is now Hood County in 1858. He purchased a small tract of land near Granbury, currently owned by James H. Henderson. Subsequently, he settled in Granbury, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1872, when he attained the age of seventy-five years. He was well advanced in life when he reached Texas, and until the end of his days he lived in retirement, cared for by his sons, who quickly became important business factors in the locality and highly properous men. Mrs. Nutt departed this life in 1890, aged eighty-three years. She was a lady of sterling Christian qualities, and was an acceptabel member of the Baptist church." "Of the twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Nutt, eleven grew to maturity and at present four survive, namely: Jesse F.; Jacob; Henry, who residen in Neosho, Missouri; and D. L." Later in his book he states: "Thomas Nutt did recount some of the family history, telling of the family decision to move to Texas, as related to him by his father and grandfather. Uncle Jake and Uncle Lee Nutt were believed to have visited in Neosho after their blindness, probably during the 1920s. As stated before, Tom Nutt recounted his family's journey down the old road that leads into Tennessee. He stated that although Eli Whitney is credited with the invention of the Cotton Gin, the first successful gin was built and patented by his great-great uncle??? The fact that an earlier gin was invented by a Nutt was recorded in Mississippi history. Thomas also said that his grand-father and family walked from Tennessee through Kentucky to Newton County, Mo. The area, at that time, was uncharted and the roads were not distinct enough or smooth enough to ride or pull the wagons much of the time. So, the men of the family walked ahead and tried to clear the way for the rest, so that they could follow. Dave Nutt's (father of Henery and grandfather of Thomas) blacksmith shop was located one block north of Spring St. on the corner of College and McCord Streets in Neosho,Mo. A family home also stood at this site, although it is not known just when the family lived there, or for how long. The shop was later owned and operated by a 'Black' who was known as "Uncle Aaron." He told Claude F. Nutt, son of Thomas) that he was born in the old cabin across College Street west from the shop, and that his father came to Neosho with his white master who taught him the trade and later gave him the shop. Probably this occurred when David left Neosho and moved on to Texas. Then he was freed, Aaron took the name of Aaron Aarons - never used the name Nutt. The blacksmith shop stood on the site until the late 1940's or early 1950's, operated by a Mr. Nally. He was believed to be the last operating a forge in Newton County, Mo., when he closed the shop. Mr. Nally was not a relative and the date or circumstances of his purchase of the shop are not known.
