A former elementary school teacher, she delighted in the beauty of springtime with its daffodils and tulips, in decorating her home for holidays throughout the year and in being a good mommy. A graduate of St. Cecilia Academy and the University of Tennessee, she had been a resident of Woodstock, GA for the past two years. Survivors include her husband, Christopher W. Bishop Tharp was born in Orlando, Florida and received his early education in public schools there. He received a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut; an M.Div. and Doctor of Canon Law from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois; and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was ordained to the sacred ministry of deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1956 and in 1957 as a priest. He served in parishes in Florida before taking a sabbatical year in England, studying at Kings College London. When he returned to the United States, he became rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Columbia, Tennessee and after serving there ten years moved to Knoxville and became Canon to the Ordinary, serving in that capacity for fourteen years before being elected to succeed the Rt. Rev. William E. Sanders, as Bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee. He served in that office until his retirement in 1999. Besides serving in diocesan and community organizations, Bishop Tharp also served as chairman of the board of Episcopal Relief and Development in New York City; Kanuga Conferences in Hendersonville, North Carolina; and the Society for the Promoting of Christian Knowledge in Sewanee, Tennessee. He also served as Trustee of the University of the South; St. Andrew's-Sewanee School; and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. A Celebration of his life with a Mass of Resurrection will be held at St. John's Cathedral in Knoxville on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. with The Rt. Rev. Charles G. vonRosenberg and The Rt. Rev. William E. Sanders, Officiants. Interment will be private in the Memorial Garden of the Cathedral. A reception will be held following the service in the Great Hall of the Cathedral.
