[Jack Tatum's Family Tree PURE.FTW] John Tatom was a private in the Regular Army. North Carolina Regiment, Commanded by Captain Dickson. He served under Grneral Washington: fought in the Battle of Monmouth. and was at Yorktown when General Cornwallis surrendered { see Mary Tatom. North Carolina W. 999: Bounty Land Warrant # 34534 - 160 - 55 } North Carolina Land Grant No. 545, recorded in N. C. Secretary of state's Office, Raleigh, N. C. " Roster of North Carolina Soldiers in the Revolution ", page 245 } In 1790 He and his wife Mary lived in Orange County, North Carolina. beside his widowed mother Mouring Tatom, { see State Records. North Carolina, Vol 126 page 1299 } They moved to Georgia for about 10 years. then on to Dickson County, Tennesse. Records show them to be in Dickson County, Tennesse. in 1806, In fact , they are thought to have moved into the area before Dickson County, was organized in 1804, The Tatoms lived in an area of Dickson County, Tennesse. known as " TATOM HOLLER " on Yellow Creek. He is also said to have owned a whiskey still described by Goodspeed: "These distilleries were long, low, log houses and were supplied with the old-fashioned copper worm. The beer would be run off one day, allowed to cool for a day, and then run through the worm again on the third day. The capacity of the average still was about one berrel per day." John Tatom was appointed overseer of the construction of part of a road between Charlotte and Vernon in Dickson County, Tennesse. In October 1817, John was to work the road from the " nine mile tree" to "The County line at William Lovels " John was authorized to have the following ' hands' Stephen Tatum, Richard Tatum, James Tatum, William Tatum, Wilson Hudson, John Scott, Davis McClanehan, John Baker, John A. Baker, James Baker, Richmond Baker, Armstrong Baker, Absolam Baker, Samuel Tubb, Pleasant Hart, and Anderson England, { see " Pioneers of Dickson County, Tennesse." by Carol Wells } It is quite obvious that Stephen, Richard, James, and William Tatum were John's Sons. since there were no other ' Tatums' by those names living in the area. John Tatom changed his name to John Tatum prior to 1783. More about John Tatom Sr, [ Deed Book B, page 396 Dickson Co, TN ] John Tatum Sr, for " good will I bear to WILLIAM TATOM, my lawful son " land, stock, land where I now reside and furniture.
