Notes for this person

Conrad was born in Germany, the son of Carsten Heinrich Friedrich Meyer& Anna Dorothea Ritz. His father brought the entire family to Americasetting out on the ship Saxonia on and arriving in New York. (This wassomewhere between 1855-1858.) They first settled in Cook County, Illinois, and stayed for about 15 years before removing to Benton County, Iowa.

Recent documents find that the family attended St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cooper's Grove, Town Rich, Cook County, Tinley Park,Country Club Hills, Illinois, as it shows the following:

"G. D. Conrad Meyer - b. April 18, 1848 - Confirmed April 27, 1856"

That is the first evidence I have ever seen giving other initials/namesto his name! Probably Gerhard Dietrich??? This evidence was shared tome by a cousin with whom I share DNA and we are trying to verify how.... she is Lois (Meyer) Voeltz :)

Conrad married Elizabeth Mary Brenneisen on 17 Oct 1873, and were blessed with 7 children: Carl John Edward, Louis Ernest Henry, Elizabeth, Ernest August, Henry and William August Meyer.

The couple celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1923, which wasvery unusual for that period, and the family had a big celebration with a photographer coming all the way from Charles City to Bassett to take their picture. A copy of that photograph is to the left - of the entire Meyer family - all of their children and grandchildren. Each of their 5 sons gave them a $5 gold piece for an anniversary present.

Conrad passed away 14 January 1929, in Bassett, Chickasaw County, Iowa, and Lizzie followed him in death on 25 August 1931.
