Michael ZIRKLE

According to the Northern Virginia Daily, not far from the village of Quicksburg in Forestville resides the historic Zirkle Mill. The mill was owned by Andrew Zirkle, one of the five brothers migrating south from Pennsylvania before settling in the Shenandoah Valley. The Zirkle mill that still stands today was erected in the 1760s. Each of the Zirkle brothers also served as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. Flour from the mill was taken north to provision for the war-torn Boston citizens who were then surrounded by the British Army. The Zirkle Mill also has unique Civil War history as it was spared from being destroyed during the burning of grist mills and barns that took place by George Armstrong Custer's army known by many residents as simply "The Burning." Zirkle of Forestville wrote shortly before his death "The old graveyard used to have a good many tombstones in it, but for many years it has been unfenced. Now cattle graze over the bodies of our forefathers, most of the tombstones have disappeared."
