Notes for this person
THE DRUMMOND TIMES Drummond, Garfield Co., OK May 28, 1926 Page 1, column 4: Bert Zirkle, for many years a prominent resident of this section of the state, died at his home in Enid at 12:05 p.m., Tuesday following an illness of about nine months. He was 50 years, 3 months and one day old. His illness became serious last fall when he collapsed in the street at Enid and had to be taken to his home. He had been fighting a losing battle most of the time since then. A fall sustained several years ago is thought to have been the forerunner of his trouble, it is said. Complete paralysis came on him several days before death. Mr. Zirkle was one of the pioneer residents of this community and lived in Lahoma and on his farm southwest of Lahoma for years, being a leader in all public affairs. For years, he was one of the most successful auctioneers in this section of the state. He sold his farm last year and moved to Enid where he was engaged in the grocery business. Shortly after going to Enid the illness came on him which finally resulted in death. His case baffeled all of the efforts of the best doctors and surgeons but up until a few days before his death, he never gave up the battle for life. He leaves his wife, one daughter, Mrs. C. Salmon, of Tulsa and two sons, Forrest and Glen, of Enid; his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Zirkle, of Lahoma, his death being the first of their children to go, and they are 82 and 80 years old respectively; Mrs. Myrtle Burchfield, of Lahoma, his twin sister; three other sisters, Mrs. Chas. Kitchen, of Lahoma; Mrs. O.W. Gregory, of Hastings and Mrs. C.H. Willis, of Perryton, Tex.; three brothers, Clarence, of Perryton, Tex; Will, of Stafford, Ks.; and Oren, of Ensign, Ks., besides other relatives. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church in Enid, Wednesday, at 4 p.m., followed by interment in Enid cemetery.
