Published in York Daily Record & York Dispatch on Feb. 13, 2015: James R. Gable, Sr., 89, formerly of Manchester, passed away at 03:40 PM on Sunday, February 08, 2015, in Providence Place in Dover. He was born September 22, 1925, in Columbia the son of the late Howard and Mary (Charleston) Gable. James enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. He was employed for thirty-five years by New Cumberland Army Depot as an Aircraft Examiner until his retirement in 1983. James was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church on South George Street, York. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7045, Hellam and the American Legion Post 791, Shiloh. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his first wife: Barbara (Drescher) Gable of Columbia, who died in 1953; his second wife: Betty (Zirkle) Gable of Dover, who died in 2012; and, his brothers: Harold, William "Ken," Gerald, Harry "Hob," Donald, Richard, Robert, and Jack. He is survived by his daughter: Debra Billet of York; his son: the Rev. James R. Gable, Jr. and his wife, Jayne of Lititz; his granddaughters: Christine (Gable) Colantoni of Lititz and Hayley Billet of York; his great-granddaughters: Josie and Ava Colantoni; his great-grandson: Eli Colantoni; his sisters: Mary Louise Stein of Wrightsville and Lois Hake of Columbia; and, his brother: Joseph Gable of Columbia. James' Memorial Service will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 16, 2015 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 25 W. Springettsbury Avenue, York. Burial will be private in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
