Notes for this person
Born in covered wagon on way to Russia from Germany, was a teacher and a preacher. Spent some time in Kreis Konets, West Prussia, in 1912. Later moved to Karft by Whittenberg. Returned to Germany 1912 with family. Was drafted into German army 1914. Went to Brazil abt 1922-1924. May have had a brother, August, who also went to Brazil. (Source: Rudolf Reschke, personal interview, 1976.)
Karft is where sons were living when they immigrated to USA in 1922-23. (Ellis Island Records.)
I continued research of the Reschke family and came upon a young man by the name of Marcus Klutzney in Germany who assisted me with my research. Through his efforts, I was able to find many ancestors of my late husband Alfred Walter Reschke. On 3/19/2004 I received this email from Marcus who translated a letter from a Mr. Steinbruch whom I hired through Marcus to do some research for me (exerpts only):
".... the document led at the district administration office Hagenow (national main archives Schwerin. 5.12-9/2 district administration office Hagenow - farmstead documents - of No. 2399) to the farm No. 17 in Karft see. In it there is the sales contract closed before the notary Dr. Hans Ernst Schroeder in Wittenburg over the farm from 17 July 1919 ... From document comes out also that the contract, with which Adolf Reschke sold the yard again, was already concluded on 4 March 1924. In the contract Adolf Reschke committed itself to vacate the yard by 1 April 1924. .... Genealogical interesting.... is that into it´s Adolf Reschke on 3 November 1870 in "Gr. Krosnewize in Poland" born one calls. A further document that confirms its occupation than farmer, gives information over the place of residence to the family, before it came to Brahlstorf*and Karft: .....had a settler plot/lot in Bonhausen with Konitz in their possession, when efficiently and industriously admits.Konitz, 8 August 1919. The land advice "I checked in my encyclopedias and found that with Konitz the district town is meant in West-Prussia. Yours sincerely, Karl-Heinz Steinbruch (Researcher) (The above means he was born 3 Nov 1870 in Krosnewize, Poland.) *Barlsdorf?
"Already I knew end of last week in former times the document led at the district administration office Hagenow (national main archives Schwerin. 5.12-9/2 district administration office Hagenow - farmstead documents - of No. 2399) to the farm No. 17 in Karft see. In it there is the sales contract closed before the notary Dr. Hans Ernst Schroeder in Wittenburg over the farm from 17 July 1919 and a rough inventory list in copy. From document comes out also that the contract, with which Adolf Reschke sold the yard again, was already concluded on 4 March 1924. In the contract Adolf Reschke committed itself to vacate the yard by 1 April 1924. The acknowledgment of the buyer as new owner dragged on then until 1926. Starting from 1924 is no more speech of Adolf Reschke in the document. I assume thus he left the yard according to the contract. Genealogical interesting at the document probably is that into it´s Adolf Reschke on 3 November 1870 in "Gr. Krosnewize in Poland" born one calls. A further document that confirms its occupation than farmer, gives information over the place of residence to the family, before it came to Brahlstorf and Karft: "Mr. Adolf Reschke, at present in Karft with Wittenburg, it is when desired certified that he is by occupation a farmer. Me is the family Reschke, which so far had a settler plot/lot in Bonhausen with Konitz in their possession, when efficiently and industriously admits. Konitz, 8 August 1919 The land advice.I checked in my encyclopedias and found that with Konitz the district town is meant in West-Prussia. I wish you that these information helps somewhat and remain.Yours sincerely, Karl-Heinz Steinbruch"
Map of Poland shows Krosniewice to be about 85 miles west of Warsaw or 12 miles SE of Przedecz, where Adolf was probably baptized, and the area where Adolf taught school for 23 years.
Adolf Reschke the called owners of yard in Karft let the following children in Wittenburg confirmed: - August, born 27 November 1906 in Antonowka, confirmed 1921 Adolf Woldemar, born 11 December 1908 in Antonowka, confirmed 1923
3/24/04 "Adolf went back to Germany, was a lousy farmer, but a religious fanatic. Grandpa's testimonial (autobiograph) was typed from the original handwritten copy by his son August Reschke in Brazil and translated into English by my father Reinholdt. Adolf moved from town to town teaching. Was well educated, a teacher and minister." Quote from grandson Herb Reschke who LATER sent me a copy of the autobiography. (Elaine Reschke)
Adolf's autobiography revealed many things. First: He had a brother by the name of Gustav, a sister by the name of Leontine. He was a teacher and a minister in Poland for 23 years. His first teaching position was in JANOWITZ (one year, 1890), then in SAPUST-BORATYN, (10 years, 1891-1901), then in ROMANOW 2 (five years, 1901-1906), then in ANTONOWKA (1906-1913). He says " in 1910 my oldest son BERTHOLD who had learned the shoemaker trade in LUTZK emigrated to North America, I began to seriously consider emigration, too. In the spring of 1913 we turned our decision into fact and start our long journey to North America with a stop-over in Germany where we had some friends." They bought a farm of 60-80 acres in BONHAUSEN-KONITZ, West Prussia. The family had grown to nine children. In 1914 Adolf and two sons were drafted into the military service. (RUDOLF was a prisoner for 2 1/2 years in England.) "But God Almighty held his protective hand over us so that we all came back alive and unhurt. The farmwork was continued during the war years. In the second year of the war our place in Bonhausen became a haven for all the relative-refugees from Wolhynia, Russia. My brother GUSTAV and his wife and family were the first (4 sons), second was my brother-in-law JOHANN (Fehr) and wife and family (4). Last came old man NICKEL.....(adoptive parents of Adolf's wife).... and our grandparents... they stayed for one year and returned to Wolhynia.....My sister LEONTINE (Fehr's wife)...became ill and died in Germany. ...... sold property in Bonhausen in time before Poland officially took over. This was in the spring of 1919. I and the family moved to Mecklenburg where we bought a farm in Karft by Wittenburg......with a loan from my cousin Reinhard Lucht. (Hulda Lucht's father)." Adolf was unable to emigrate to the United States because of the new quota law, but five of his oldest children went there prior to the law. Adolf and spouse and several children went to Brazil [to port of FLORENTINE at Santa Catalina] because his brother Gustav had gone there previously with his family. (I found Gustav and his wife Auguste and 4 children on a Passenger and Immigration list from Bremen to Rio de Janerio 16 Dec 1922. Decendants may live in Ijui or thereabouts.)
Read history of Russia and Germany during time of Katherine the Great who lured Germans to Russia to til the land. (Go to Google.com and type in Katherine the Great.)
