Johann wurde 1167 als fünfter Sohn Heinrichs II. (Henri Plantagenet) und Herzogin Eleonores von Aquitanien (Aliénor d'Aquitaine) in Oxford geboren. <p>Seinen Beinamen Ohneland erhielt Johann, weil sein Vater Heinrich II. ihm bei der Aufteilung des Erbes in den 1160er Jahren lediglich kleinere Randgebiete des Angevinischen Reichs zusprach: die Grafschaft Mortain und die erst kurz zuvor eroberten und noch nicht vollkommen befriedeten östlichen Gebiete Irlands sowie (durch Heirat) Savoyen.
