Mary was born on the Prellwitz farm near Mahaska, Kansas, that Paul (her father) had bought for 50 cents down payment, and this is where she grew up. They lived there until she was 8 years old. Theycould only speak German and when Mary and Albert started to school the kids made fun of them, so they bought a place down by Haddam and moved there, and that's where they finished their schooling. My grandpa, Henry Nutsch, said he got his education at the Blocker College. Mary would carry her little brothers to school with her. It was about a three mile hike. Henry started school when he was only 4 years old because there was no one at home to take care of him while the older children were in school.
