Paul, as a young boy desprately yearned to go to America. Against his father's wishes, he was able to talk him into letting him go for a visit, when his brother and his family planned to go. His son,Henry, (my grandfather) told "he must still be visiting, because he never went back!" (Susan Holmes) Paul came to America, at the age of 15 with his brother John and his family, aboard the ship Lessing. They arrived in New York 12-8-1880, Paul's entire possessions consisted of 2.00 dollars, two pair of overalls (both with holes in them) and a small feather mattress. Paul accompanied John and his family to their brother Gottfried's home in Washington Co., Kansas. This is the first Paul knew his brother Gottfried, because Paul was only 19 months old when Gottfried left Germany. The next two years Paul worked for Gottfried, mostly herding cattle. The first year he worked he earn 40.00 andthe second year he earned 48.00. The following two years, according to grandpa Henry, he went to work for Mr. Hoffine. He beleived he could make more money working for someone else. Paul bought his first 80 acre farm for 3.00 dollars an acre with a fifty- cent down payment. He bought this farm from his sister Anna and husband Michael Karl. It was located seven miles east of Mahaska, in Washington Co., Kansas. Paul's sister Mariea (Nutsch) Sieldel loaned him a setting hen to start his chicken flock. Six years later in May of 1891, Paul married Creszencia Koch. The application for a marriage license for Paul and Creszencia shows the maiden name of Paul's mother to be Stiller, instead of Mueller. This also corresponds with the translation of Frank I and Bertha (Langener) Nutsch's marriage record, where Frand's mother's maiden name is translated as Stiller. Paul and Creszencia lived on this farm for 12 years. In 1902 Paul and Creszencia bought a farm 3 miles east of Haddam, Kansas for 24.00 and acre. They moved here in 1903. Paul and Creszencia built anew house and Creszencia lived it four years before she died during childbirth in 1908. Paul and Creszencia did not have a bible, so Paul recorded the family birth and death records in the front ofa cook book, after Creszencia's death. Paul's niece, Hellena, daughter of Frank and Bertha Nutsch, stayed with Paul and the children the first year after Creszencia's death. Paul was faithful in taking his children to church every Sunday, even though it was a long trip with a team and wagon. Paul's sister, Mariea (Nutsch) Seidel, was a big help to Paul in the succeeding years and his children came to know her, fondly, as "Aunt Seide". Grandpa Henry tells, that Paul would make them say prayers everynight before they went to bed for about an hour. After Albert came home from the service, he refused to say the prayers, and Paul never insisted after that. Grandpa said his dad always wore a full beard, and even though he was a young man when his wife died, could not remember him ever having a "woman friend" . However, he used to take the train to Kansas City, occasionally. One time he came home from Kansas City and had shaved off his beard. He came around the side of the house and like to scared grandpa to death. He didn't even recognize him.
