Charles McClure was born in 1929 in Murphysboro and had lived in Murphysboro his entire life. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Clara McClure of Murphysboro; and siblings, Mrs. Nadine Pitts and Mrs. Dorothy Spicer, both of Marseilles, Illinois, Mrs. Estelle Bricker of Quincy, Massachusetts, Seth A. McClure of Murphysboro and Pfc. Robert McClure, U.S. Army. He was a member of the National Guard unit in Carbondale and of the First Lutheran Church of Murphysboro. He was employed at the Brown Shoe Company plant in Murphysboro prior to military service. Charles entered military service in August of 1949. He served one year in Germany before being sent to Korea. Charles was killed in action in Korea in March of 1951. He was Murphysboro's first reported Korean war casualty.
