Edward C. Borneman, Sr., prominent in business, church, fraternal and civic affairs of this community (Elkhart, Ind.) for almost 50 years, died Wednesday afternoon, October 25, 1949, in Elkhart General hospital, at the age of 67. He had been seriously ill and bedfast for three weeks, and was taken to the hospital from the family home at 1126 East Jackson blvd. on Oct. 12. Mr. Borneman was vice-president of Borneman & Sons, pioneer hardware firm founded here by his father, the late Herman Borneman, Sr., and George Doll, Sr., on May 8, 1877, nearly 75 years ago. Long In Business - The original partnership of Borneman and Doll was dissolved about 1902, and the father and his two sons, Edward C. and Herman F., started a new concern. Their first location was at 205 South Main st., but later the store moved to its present quarters at 228-230 South Main st. Herman Borneman, Sr., died May 12, 1934, and his two sons carried on. Edward C. became vice-president and Herman president. Older Elkhartans will also recall that some years ago Edward's two brothers George O., now Elkhart county clerk, and the late Fred Borneman operated another hardware business known as Electric Hardware Co., in Elkhart. Lifelong Resident - Mr. Borneman was a life-long resident of Elkhart. He was born here July 13, 1882, son of Herman and Katherine (Wagner ) Borneman. He marriage to Pauline Shaw took place in Elkhart on Feb. 8, 1907. Besides his close association with local business affairs, he was active in church work, both at St. John's Episcopal church and in the northern Indiana diocese of the Episcopal church. He served on the bishop's executive council of the diocese, and on the vestry board of the local church. He also served on the board of directors and as vice-president of Howe Military school. He had been active in earlier years in Chamber of Commerce affairs. Other affiliations were with the City club, Kiwanis club, the Masonic orders, Elks, Moose and the Bologna club. Funeral Saturday - Surviving besides the widow are three children, Mrs. Whitney (Mary) Slabaugh, Mrs. C. B. (Margaretha) Stringfellow, and E. C. (Bud) Borneman, Jr.; the two brothers, George O. and Herman; a sister, Mrs. Rose Schutes, and seven grandchildren, all of Elkhart. The body will to be taken today from the Walley funeral home to the residence; where friends may call after 7 o'clock tonight until 9 a.m. Saturday. The body will then be taken to St. John's church for services at 10 a.m., In charge of the Rev, Leslie Skerry Olsen. Burial will be in Grace Lawn cemetery.
