Notes for this person

No Angus or A Walke or other variation in 1840 US Census Index. According to Dietrich Kroehnke obituary, he died of mental illness. Warren County was formed in 1833 from Montgomery County. Will book A covers 1833-1846 and does not list either August or Lisette. From: "Jenny Sandercock" South Australia Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2004 07:01:48 +1030 I am researching the Walke family in Australia from either Germany/Prussia and England. I think our answers lie more in shipping records than births death and marriage records. My anecdotal story is that they went to England and America from Prussia to escape religious persecution -that certainly ties in if you read the history of Prussia, and see how the unscrupulous shipping agents had a lot of control over where these poor migrants went. I look either side of the 1880 census and have found relatives living close to each other in their little German enclaves. I am looking for a Walke Warhurst connection and I believe they are from Stemmer Minden in Prussia Date: Thu, 25 Mar 2004 11:00:20 -0600 From: "George W. Giles" Subject: RE: WALCKE August Walcke came to Warren County, Missouri sometime about 1833 as part of The Berlin Society, with Frederick Rathje and his wife Emilie Bock. The other members were Augustus A. Blumner and his brother Karl (Charles) Blumner and his wife Dorothea; Cunerand and brothers Julius and Edward Hutiwa. In Marriage Records, Warren County, Missouri by Howard Woodruff (1969) both August Walke and August Blumner were transcribed as "Angus." The emigration was funded by Johann Wilhelm Bock, who followed soon and platted the town of Dutzow. Dutzow was established by 14 friends and relatives when 168 lots were laid out and offered for sale. There is evidence to suggest that Lisette Holst may have been the sister of Frederick Rathje (Radje). The Company bought a part of Spanish Survey 1769 and sold their interest to Rathje and his father-in-law F. W. Bock 30 Aug 1833. Lisette bought Lot 36 in the original town of Dutzow, founded by Bock in 1833, and apparently still owned this lot at her death. Frederick Rathje was married to a Emilie, daughter of F. W. Bock and died in the 1840s. There is a will in the Warren County Will Book (A) filed in on 16 Jul 1835 on pages 60-62 for Rathye (Rathje), Frederick, Administrator: Frederick A Rasmus (Rasmusson), with securities John William Bock and Edward Kunzel. The small town of Dutzow was close to the second Missouri home of Daniel Boone and to the farm of Gottfried Duden in the Lake Creek community north of Dutzow in Warren County. Wilhelm von Bock, a staunch believer in communistic ideals, named the town in honor of his Prussian hometown Mecklenberg. I have no information on what happened to her daughters. Two places to look would be in Franklin County, Missouri across the river from the Dutzow area which had a large influx of Germans or St. Louis, Missouri. Since Dutzow is close to the St. Charles County, Missouri line with Warren County, they could have gone in that direction. The Evangelical Seminary, where Kroehnke taught, was near Marthasville, northeast of Dutzow. It is now a home for mentally handicapped people ran by the U. C. C. Church. The reason I have this information is from a research project with a local author who is descended from F. W. Bock. It appears that Rathje & Co. probably bought the land in 1832 before Warren County was split off from Montgomery County, Missouri in January 1833.  The Montgomery County Courthouse was burned the first time in October 1864 and twice since.  No early records survive.   Rathje died Intestate and an administratior was appointed July 16, 1835.  Warren County, Missouri Wills and Administrator Bonds, Book A, pages 60-61.   His widow, Emilie Rathje (nee Bock) later married Adolph Krueger in 1837 and moved to Washington across the Missouri River in Franklin County, Missouri and lived out her life there.  I think Krueger was a lawyer. Frederick Julius Gustorf wrote in Uncorrupted Heart, about a visit to Dutzow May 26, 1834 by Steine or Steines who reported he found Bock in business with Rathje, and running a distillery. I don't know if Rathje survived long enough to start the Naturalization process or not.  BOCK's first papers are recorded in Warren County, Missouri.  I don't have a copy of this information, but think it is in the Circuit Court Records. I do know that Bock was in Philadelphia for some time before coming to Warren County.  I do have the ship's passenger information on his wife and daughters coming over, but not when he did.  He came to Warren county and built a house before sending for his wife and family who stayed with friends in Philadelphia. It appears that Rathje came through Baltimore in 1829. Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore 1820-1834 (1982, Bentley) lists Emile Rathje, age 20 (source 253) Fredk Rathje, age 29 Walter Kamphoefner in News from the Land of Freedom: German Immigrant Write Home (1991) Friedrich Rathje is listed as immigrating in 1832 to Baltimore. August Walcke is listed through Baltimore in 1832. (Source 3702.7) This resource is now out of print. I have just completed an inter-library request for this resource, hopefully one of the 700 holding libraries will be able to provide. Ships to Baltimore 1820-1833 taken from M255-1 of the National Archives records names only one vessel for 1832, on August 19 recording the frigate ship Palembang (or Palemburg), from Bremen. Transcribed listing for this voyage does not list Rathje or Walcke, however. It is possible that other Baltimore records are not preserved, as there certainly were other vessels arriving there in 1832.
