Birth:
He was born at 2 p.m. on the 15th of March 1883 in his grandparents' house, house no. 31 in the village Bornreihe in the Hambergen parish near Osterholz-Scharmbeck in Lower Saxony in Germany. His mother was the then unmarried Gesche Catharina Grotheer. His father was Friedrich Heinrich Mohrmann from the village Coldewey in the Sulingen parish, which is also in Lower Saxony. (C5)
In 1910 Bornreihe was a small village where 217 inhabitants lived. (A1)
Hambergen had 808 inhabitants in 1910. Then it had a post office, a registry, a Lutheran church, a bank, a dairy, a mill and brickworks. (A1)

Childhood and Youth:
His parents married one month after he was born. (C5)
One year later his mother died. (C5)
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that Diedrich Mohrmann was given to a family in the Teufelsmoor region, to raise him. They were farmers and good people. Perhaps the family was that of Johann Hinrich Kück, who was Gesche Mohrmann's stepfather.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that Diedrich Mohrmann had to work on a farm in the summer months. In the winter months he was able to attend the local primary school.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that when he was old enough to start an apprenticeship, he moved to Bremen and lived with his father and step mother in their flat in the Hardenberg Straße in the suburb Neustadt. He became a cabinetmaker. Afterwards he worked for the Adamoski Company in the suburb Neustadt.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that he was conscripted and trained as an infantryman.

Marriage:
When he was 27 years old, on the 12th of November 1910, he married the single Elsa Frieda Mulde, who was from Bremen. (B1)

World War I:
World War I broke out on the 28th of July 1914.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that he fought in the infantry. He was injured in 1916. Later he was injured at a shin by a piece from a hand grenade. The wound became infected and his leg was amputated in a hospital in Bad Kreuznach in Germany. Then he was moved to the Mißler hospital in the suburb Findorff in Bremen. There he learned to walk with an artificial leg.

Peace Years:
Wilhelmine balcke told me that, after the war had finished, in January 1919, he was given a house by the German government to compensate for his war injury. The house is at 39 Alexander Straße in the suburb Ostertor in Bremen. It is a two storey terrace house with a cellar. It is still standing.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that he was given work in the port of Bremen. He had to carry heavy pieces of timber. This work was too strenuous for him. From 1930 until 1938 he worked as a barman in the canteen of the Beck & Co. brewery.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that in his spare time he liked gardening. Originally they had a garden in the Claudius Weg in the suburb Neustadt. Later they gave it up, because it was too far away. They then rented a garden in the Habenhauser Weg in the suburb Werder.

World War II:
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that when the war broke out in 1939, he was working for a coffee processing company in the city of Bremen. The company was probably the Onko company. The factory was damaged during air raids. After that he had to work for the Fokke-Wulf aeroplane manufacturing company in the suburb Hemelingen. Hemelingen is four kilometres from his home. The trams did not operate after bombing raids. Then he had to walk the distance on one leg. This contributed to his heart disease.

Peace Years:
On the 8th of May 1945 the war finished in the western hemisphere.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that he was not able to work any more, because he suffered from Angina Pectoris, a heart disease.

Death:
He died at 9.30 a.m. on the 18th of October 1948 in his house. He was 65 years old. (B1)
