In the 1850 census of Berkshire, Vermont, Andrew C. Comings is found (as Andrew C. Commings), age 31, born in Vermont, a farmer, with $1500 in real estate, with wife Amanda, age 29, born in Vermont, daughter Harriet, age 6, son Charles, age 4, and daughter Betsy (later called Fidelia), age 2. Harriet and Charles had both attended school within the year. In 1862 the family removed from Vermont to Oberlin, O., to obtain the advantages of education there. Mr. Comings was a devoted member of the Congregational church there and in Springfield, Missouri, his last residence. (The Cummings Memorial, p. 390. Note that while his wife died in Springfield, he died in Chicago at the home of his daughter Betsy Fidelia Comings and her husband J. H. Pitkin. DBR 2001) A Mary Comings, sister to A. G. Comings, was enumerated with him and his wife in Russia Twp. in the 1920 census, where her age is given as 55 and she is said to have been born in Vermont. As that would make her year of birth 1865, it would seem that A. C. Comings may have moved to Ohio after 1862--or the informant may have been mistaken. Apparently he first settled in Russia Township, about one mile from Oberlin. In the 1880 census, he is found (as Andrew Comings) in the household of his son-in-law Robert B. Leonard in St. Louis, Larimer Co., CO, age 62, born in Vermont to parents born in Massachussets and NH, a farmer, with wife Amanda J.
