The birth of Amanda Janes is not recorded in the records of Berkshire, Vermont, nor is it mentioned in "The Janes Family, A Genealogy and Brief History of the Descendants of William Janes, The Emigrant Ancestor of 1637" by the Rev. Frederic Janes, New York, 1868. There are three Janes heads-of-households in Franklin Co., Vermont in the 1830 census, nine years after the birth of Amanda. Two are in Swanton, Lewis and Orin, and one is in Berkshire, Liberty. The Janes genealogy has this to say: "Liberty Janes married Clarinda Fuller [actually Clarissa Fuller; see NEHG Register Vol. 148, p. 266, the Joseph Fuller Bible Record] of Shoreham, Vt. They moved from there to Berkshire, in 1800, when the country was new, and the most hardy pioneers were required to subdue the virgin forests. He was a man of great industry and perseverance, and went through many hardships to open the way for social comforts and suitable prosperity in old age. For himself and children he prepared a good, quiet home. He died there in 1851, with the respect of all who knew him." (The Janes Family, pp. 151-152) In the 1830 census, Liberty Janes is found in Berkshire, Vermont. In the household are one male between the ages of 10-15, one male between the ages of 50-60 (Liberty), one female between the ages 5-10 (presumably Amanda), one female between the ages of 15-20, one female between the ages of 20-30 (perhaps Sophronia Marie), and one female between the ages of 50-60 (Clarissa). Clarissa was born in 1784, so if the female between 5-10 years old were Amanda, born 1821, Clarissa would have been almost 41 at the time of her birth. In the 1840 census of Berkshire, Vermont, Liberty Janes is found with one male between the ages of 5-10, one male between the ages of 20-30, one male between the ages of 30-40, one male between the ages of 60-70 (Liberty), one female between the ages of 5-10, one female between the ages of 10-15, one female between the ages of 20-30, one female between the ages of 30-40, and one female between the ages of 50-60 (presumably Clarissa, although she is now enumerated in a different decade). Amanda Janes Comings is found in the 1880 census in St. Louis, Larimer Co., CO, age 59, married, in the household of her son-in-law Robert B. Leonard. The informant stated that her father was born in Massachussets and her mother in NY. [The choice of the surname "Torrey" for the middle name of a son of Amanda Janes and A. C. Comings is an area for further research. The Torrey family is well represented in Vermont, although no Torrey ancestor has been found yet in Amanda Janes' lines.]
