He was a teacher and superintendent of schools in northern Ohio and resided in Brooklyn near Cleveland, Ohio. (The Cummings Memorial, p. 391) He is found in the 1880 census (as Andy G. Cummings, the "G" inserted as superscript after his given name) in Amherst, OH, age 28, born in Vermont to parents born in Vermont, teaching school, with wife Emilie J., age 28, born in OH to parents born in NY, and son Charles R., age 1, born in OH. A. G. went to Oberlin College until he was 21 (1877). He taught school for 10 years, and was a principal and superintendent in Conneaut, Ashtabula Co., Ohio (1877). He bought the Comings' Bookstore in 1889 [actually, he bought Edwin Regal's book store before 9 August 1888--DBR]. (Beers Biographical Record of Lorain ) For more than 25 years Hon. A. G. Comings has conducted a bookstore in Oberlin. Mr. Comings, who was at one time superintendent of schools at Brooklyn, a suburb of Cleveland, came to Oberlin in 1889 and assumed charge of the store which he still conducts. He has always taken an active interest in politics and represented Lorain in the legislature, having a conspicuous part in framing the Municipal Code. When the Progressive party was formed in 1912 Mr. Comings followed its fortunes. If a man of his sound judgment may be said to have hobbies, they are T. R., fishing and Y. M. C. A. work. In this latter field Mr. Comings has been a power for the good of the . (The Oberlin News, p. 1, 21 Jun 1916) "Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Comings and grandson Lee (sic), left Tuesday for their camp on the Little Manistee in Michigan. They were driven up by Charles Comings, who will return within a few days. Later in the summer Miss Adell Royce and Fred Comings will go up. Mr. and Mrs. Comings will remain their until Sep." (The Evening Telegram [Elyria, OH], 5 Jul 1917) He is enumerated in the 1920 census in Russia Twp., age 63. Mary Comings, age 55 (born about 1864, Vermont), sister, was also enumerated. She worked in the family bookstore. Obituary: Death Summons A. G. Comings of Oberlin Prominent Business Man, One of the Founders of Anti-Saloon League Passes, Had Been in Business 45 Years. Oberlin, O., Dec. 8 -- Andrew G. Comings, 76, prominent Oberlin business man, passed away at five o'clock this morning at Allen Hospital. Death was reported due to heart trouble, and followed a serious illness of only two weeks, although his health had been gradually failing for several months. He had long been prominent in Oberlin business and political affairs, having been a mayor of the village, having served two terms in the Ohio legislature, and filling other positions in the village. He was also one of the founders of the Anti-Saloon League. Mr. Comings was born at Burlington, Vermont, on Sep 26, 1856. His family moved to Oberlin at the close of the Civil War. He attended Oberlin College, being graduated in 1877. The Following year he was married to Miss Emilie Royce, of Oberlin. Taught School Following his graduation he taught school for several years in Brooklyn and Conneaut, Ohio, before returning to Oberlin to start in business in the book store which he had operated for the past 45 years. He was an active member of the First Church, serving as trustee and deacon for a number of years. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Harriet Wangerien of Okmulgee, Oklahoma; one son, Charles Comings, of Oberlin, who has been associated with him in the book store for a number of years; one brother, W. R. Comings, of Elyria; and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Leonard, of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. Fidelia Pitkin, of Wilmette, Illinois. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Church. (The Chronicle Telegram [Elyria, OH], Thursday 8 Dec 1932) Death certificate 73023, Volume 7086.
