John Swartz, Nurseryman, Dies John F. Swartz, 94, the oldest active nurseryman in the state, died at the Swartz homestead on Wood Rd., Somers Township, .this morning following a long illness. Tle was born in his home on Oct. 29, 1867, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Jacob Swartz. He had lived in the homestead all his life. In 1888, at the age of 21, he established the Swartz Nurseries, and had taken an active part in the business since that time. He was instrumental in forming the first Horticultural Society in Kenosha, and was a charter member of that organization. Ile was a member of the Wisconsin Horticultural Society, and received a distinguished service award from that group in 1953. He was a member of the Wisconsin Nursery man's Association and the American Nurseryman's Association. On May 11, 1892, he married Miss Martha Eva Pedley, who preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1944. ile was a member of First Methodist Church, Survivors are three sons, Ilarold F. and Glenn, both of Kenosha, and Roy B., Wilmot; two daughters, Mrs. Luella Mor• gan and Miss Loretta Swartz, both of Kenosha; eight grand• children; eight great grandchildren, and one brother, Arthur Swartz, Kenosha.

Correspondent Wednesday evening Mrs. Luella Morgan and her sister, Miss Lor- etta Swartz, entertained at a fam- ily reunion and dinner honoring their father, John r. Swartz, on his 85th birthday ann i v ers a r y. Those attending the dinner party were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Swartz, Arthur Swartz, Jr., and son, Earl Swartz, Walter S w a r t z, Fred Swartz, Mrs. Leon Northway and daughter and Mrs. Betty Becker, all of Kenosha; Mrs. Emma Abresch, Somers; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swartz and family, Fox River Park; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Swartz and fam- ily, Harold Swartz, Mrs. Morgan and Miss Loretta Swartz of Som. ers. Saturday evening a group of 200 friends and neighbors gathered at the Wood Road State Graded school and gave Swartz a birthday surprise party. Square dancing and cards provided the entertainment. Friends came from Kenosha, Ra- cine and Fox River Park Willard Blackmon, airman sec- ond class, who has been stationed at St. Paul, Minn., reported at Truax Field, Madison, following a brief furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Blackmon. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Bull were host and hostess at their home in Kenosha, Saturday evening to the members of the junior Bible class of the S om ers Congregational church Sunday school. About 20 attended. Refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ozanne and son, Marq, of Rockford, Ill., spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Ward C. Ozanne. Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Oskins of Russell, Ill., and Mrs, Edith Isferd- ing of Milwaukee were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Irving E. Gardinier Sunday. The Mothers club of the Wash- ington State Graded school will meet Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 6, at the school hall. Rev. Charles Wicks of Madison will occupy the pulpit at the Som- ers Congregational church Sunday, Nov. 9. The following Sunday, Nov, 16, Rev. Robert Muller will be in his pulpit.
