[Abraham.FTW] 1790 Orange County Census - This is the first census of US NC names taken from county tax lists Starts St. Mary's District Nutt, David Cates, Benjamin Cates, Matthias | ORANGE Co., NORTH CAROLINA | +----------------------------+ 1790 FIRST FEDERAL CENSUS INDEX Orange Co., North Carolina was created in 1752 from the larger Bladen, Granville and Johnston counties. Later in 1777 Caswell Co. was created from the "Northern Division" of Orange Co. Also part of Durham Co. was created in 1881 from the "Eastern" portion of Orange Co. So any of the following Surname's could have been recorded in the above Counties and never even moved! They found DAVID NUTT in the 1790 and 1810 census for Orange Co. NC, Hillsboro Districk, St. Mary's District. They also cite from Martha Eli Nutt's records the following: "David and a young brother came to America fom England prior to 1775, lived in North Carolina, moved to Tennessee and had a large family. Four sons located in Bedford County, TN, then moved to Missouri, then to Granbury, Texas." They quote from tradition in the famly of Mabin Alexander Nutt that: "DAVID NUTT was a native of England and came to America with his young brother before 1775. Both settled in North Carolina. David served as Sheriff and the name was changed from McNutt to Nutt while he was sheriff. He married Rachel Cates while serving as Sheriff. Their sons were born...who located in Tenn, probably all in Bedford County, Tn - one ws David, Jr., who married Sarah Ann Landers. This branch of the famly went to Newton County, Missouri in 1844 and to Hood County, Texas (Granbury) in 1858." See page 99. They searched the records in Orange County, NC and found no mention of wills for NUTT. In his book, "The Nutt Family," (1973), Merle C. Nutt quotes from "History of the Nutt Family of Granbury, Texas" as follows: The Nutt family of Granbury, and Hood county-so ably represented in mercantile and social circles by the brothers J.F. Nutt and D. L. Nutt-are descended on the paternal side from David Nutt, grandfather of these gentlemen, who, according to the best information obtainable, was a native of England. When but a boy, in company with a brother also in his minority, he left their native land to seek a home and fortune in the western world. The accumulating mist of years has obscured the date of their arrival upon American shores, yet dates exist to justify the placing of that event previous to the breaking out of the Revolutionary War in 1775." He continues: "These brothers settled in North Carolina where so far as known, they made permanent homes and became useful and respected citizens. Tradition asserts that the grandfather, David Nutt, was a man of local prominence, and efficiently served the people of his county in this capacity of sheriff. From the best evidence extant, it appears that the name was originally McNutt, and that the orthographic change occurred in this branch of the American family when David Nutt was sheriff. He was married in North Carolina to Rachel Cates, by whom he had a large family of children. Four of his sons located in Tennessee, probably all in Bedford county, and one of the number, David, Jr. was the father of the Nutt brothers of Granbury." Another source indicates the following: "David was b. England and immigrated with a brother as a minor prior to 1775. He settled in NC where he married Rachel Cates. They had 4 sons, including a David, who moved to TN, probably all in Bedford Co. The son David was b. c. 1797, m. Sarah Ann Landers in TN; they moved to Newton Co., MO, & then to Hood Co, TX. He died 1872 age 75 in Granby, TX. Children were Jesse F., Jacob, Abel, Susan A., a twin of S.A., D.L., Henery, Robert L., Elizabeth P., Mary, Phoeba, Ann, & John M. Jesse F. b. 1-19-1833 in Bedford Co. & m. Elizabeth Landers 4-10-1853. Their only children to survive infancy were Abbie & Josie. ...the surname of the mother of James and John... was Frances "Fanny" Weaver....lot of ... information came from the book "Nutt/McNutt, Descendants of David Nutt of Orange County, North Carolina".
